Dear Colleague,

Greeting form Bangladesh Society of Diabetes Practitioners (BSDP). You are aware that according to the IDF Diabetes Atlas, there are an estimated >8.4 million people with diabetes in Bangladesh and a similar number of people with prediabetes. The IDF projected that the number of people with diabetes will increase to 16.8 million by 2030, placing Bangladesh among the top ten countries globally in terms of number of people living with diabetes. The prevalence of diabetes varies from 4.5% to 35% with a pooled prevalence of 8%. The risk factors for diabetes in Bangladesh identified, namely increased age, obesity, social class, hypertension, family history, sedentary life style among others. The economic and human costs caused by diabetes in a large population is very high and not yet well studied. Diabetes can lead to multisystem complications of microvascular endpoints, including retinopathy, nephropathy and neuropathy, and macrovascular endpoints including ischaemic heart disease, stroke and peripheral vascular disease. The premature morbidity, mortality, reduced life expectancy and financial and other costs of diabetes make it an important public health condition. Patients with diabetes lack proper knowledge of their conditions and also suffers from co-morbid depression.
The growing epidemic of diabetes in Bangladesh and other developing countries suggest that traditional methods for diabetes management in hospital settings or clinics might not be adequate to control the epidemic alone. Diabetes Association of Bangladesh (BADAS) is pioneering and unique organization in our country, doing wonderful work for prevention and treatment of Diabetes. Bangladesh is proud of organization like BADAS, who are giving multiple services to diabetic patients even more than government services. Today we must remember late Prof. Dr Mohammad Ibrahim founder of BADAS. But the disease burden related to diabetes is so enormous and rising in every the problem so t it needs multi-sectorial social, scientific and organizational approach to meet the challenges. Bangladesh Society for Diabetes practitioners (BADP) is formed to complement other societies and organization. Its objective is to organize most of the practitioner who practices diabetes or doing research on diabetes. We will improve and update the knowledge and skill of the diabetes practice. We also hope to improve the awareness about diabetes among in children adult population in our country. Our expectation is that Diabetic management to be more scientific among non-endocrine practitioner ultimately and it would be a easy-to-use and cost-effective interventions. We cannot forget our social responsibility.

We wish you all the success.
